A new type of henicosnuclear heterometallic clusters [Cd13Ni8S8(edt)14](Et3NH)2·2H2O (edt = 1,2-ethanedithiol) (1) and [Zn13Ni8S8(edt)14](H2bpp) (bpp = 1,3-di(4-pyridyl)propane) (2) have been synthesized by solvothermal reaction. The MS4 (M = Cd, Zn) tetrahedron and the NiS4 square plane construct the two unprecedented chalcogenide-based heterometallic clusters as two primary building units.
