Whole genome sequence of fungal strain, Diaporthe (Phomopsis), an endophytic fungus, was carried out to check and compare the presence of lovastatin biosynthetic gene cluster (AF141924.1& AF141925.1). Lovastatin is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGR) in cholesterol biosynthetic pathway and hence used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. Our preliminary results revealed that Diaporthe (Phomopsis) does not produce lovastatin and are generally considered as treasure house of secondary metabolite. The analysis of whole genome of Diaporthe (Phomopsis) an endophytic fungus shows that Diaporthe (Phomopsis) did not show the presence of lovastatin gene cluster. It could be concluded that lack of lovastatin production in endophytic fungi is not to harm the plant host system in which they are residing in as the intermediate compounds of cholesterol biosynthesis are the precursor of plant growth hormones.
