Podocnemis expansa occurs in South America and is known from Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. In Brazil, it occurs in the Amazon and Tocantins/Araguaia river basins, in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes.
