The survey, which is based on a questionnaire survey carried out in 14 classes at 3 grammar schools in Copenhagen and one provincial grammar school in Zealand, examines the social and cultural backgrounds of the pupils, reading habits, spare time activities, paid work outside school hours, the pupils' educational plans and wishes, their experience of the transition from primary school to grammar school, reasons for attending grammar school, attitudes to grammar school and to the instruction in Danish language and literature, to the choice of texts and to the teaching methods. #The purpose of the analysis is to describe the instructional and educational consequences of the changes in grammar school recruitment over the past few years and the pupils' present and future situation. # The survey focuses on the clash between frame- work and requirements in the 'gymnasium' as regards the instruction (and the texts chosen) in Danish language and literature on the one hand and, on the other hand, the teachers' and the pupils' interests and background as manifested in the Danish classes. #The questionnaire survey forms part of an empirical survey comprising observations, tape recordings of Danish lessons, teacher and pupil interviews, Danish compositions, etc
