VPRS 11448 Index to Names in VPRS 7666 Inward Overseas Passenger Lists (British Ports) [Microfiche Copy of VPRS 947] [REFER TO ONLINE DATABASE ON PROV WEBSITE]

This series was a microfiche index created by Public Record Office Victoria. It indexed the names of passengers documented in VPRS 7666 and was placed in PROV Reading Rooms to assist public users. (It is currently available for purchase; refer to www.prov.vic.gov.au/publications for details.) VPRS 7666 is a microfiche copy of the inward overseas passenger lists for vessels arriving from British ports spanning the period 1852-1923, however, this microfiche index only indexed lists created until 1899.Entries in this index record the name of the passenger, age, arrival date (year/month only) and the name of the vessel. Also recorded is the number of the fiche in VPRS 7666 that contains the list for the vessel and the page number within that list that contains the entry for the passenger.This microfiche was progressively released. The first release of the index (for the period 1852 - 1859) occurred in June 1998.Entries in the index have been produced by a team of volunteers working with Public Record Office Victoria staff starting in the 1980s.This microfiche was removed from PROV Reading Rooms in 2005 following the introduction of an online database which indexes all of the names in VPRS 7666 and microfiche copies of the shipping lists for ships arriving from Foreign ports (VPRS 7667) and New Zealand ports (VPRS 13439).Prior to the production of this microfiche index, visitors to PROV Melbourne Reading Room relied on a card index to these lists, produced by PROV volunteers, that identifed passengers to the mid 1880's.
