El Signo de Jade

Frente a «El signo de Jade», un crítico tendría la tentación (o la manía profesional) de buscar una “serie” en que se inscriba. Podría ser la llamada novela de aprendizaje y pensar en el «Wilhelm Meister», el «Retrato del artista adolescente», o más cercano aún el «Paradiso» de Lezama Lima; pero al mismo tiempo, existe otra tradición igualmente fértil: la estirpe de los pueblos míticos de Faulkner, García Márquez o Juan Rulfo. Todo eso podría ser. Y, sin embargo, resulta que Nuevo Valle no es Comala, ni Macondo, sino que tiene perfil y rasgos propios, aunque es también la geografía de un pueblo imaginario.
En un pueblo donde hay carmelitas y azules, un librero y un loco, una muchacha distante, fiestas de carnaval y finalmente la muerte, todo alcanza un extraño esplendor.

When faced with "The Jade Sign," a critic might be tempted (or professionally obsessed) to look for a "series" to which it belongs. It might be the so-called coming-of-age novel, and one might think of "Wilhelm Meister," "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," or, even closer to home, Lezama Lima's "Paradiso." But at the same time, there is another equally fertile tradition: the lineage of the mythical towns of Faulkner, García Márquez, or Juan Rulfo. All of these could be true. And yet, it turns out that Nuevo Valle is not Comala, nor Macondo, but rather has its own profile and features, although it is also the geography of an imaginary town.
In a town where there are Carmelites and Blues, a bookseller and a madman, a distant girl, carnival celebrations, and finally death, everything attains a strange splendor.
