Crop diversification exerts long-term influence on soil organic carbon cycling by increasing the variety of plant residues and root exudates. The mechanisms primarily involve the microbially driven priming effect and the turnover of microbial necromass. Research shows that while diversified cropping enhances the priming of soil organic matter, it simultaneously stimulates the accumulation of microbial necromass, thereby jointly regulating the persistence of soil organic carbon.
