Campanaio destruction deposits

This dataset presents ceramic data from Late Antique destruction levels at the rural site of Campanaio, located in the province of Agrigento (Sicily, Italy). The original records were compiled by the late Roberta Tomber in 2001 using an Excel spreadsheet. Between 2024 and 2025, the dataset underwent a comprehensive process of revision, normalisation, and analytical treatment conducted by Fabrizio Ducati, with a particular focus on terminological consistency, typological clarity, and quantitative accuracy. Excel was employed for the initial structuring and formatting of the data, while R and RStudio were used for statistical processing, exploratory analyses, and data visualisation. As a result, a valuable legacy archive was transformed into a structured and reusable dataset, suitable for further archaeological interpretation and digital dissemination.

The dataset has been prepared in accordance with established disciplinary standards for archaeological ceramic studies, particularly those set out in A Standard for Pottery Studies in Archaeology (Barclay, Knight, Booth, Evans, Brown, and Wood, 2016) and La collection de référence des céramiques puniques, romaines et médiévales de Thapsus/Ras Dimass (Sghaïer, Bonifay, Touihri, and Gourar, eds, 2023). These publications provided the conceptual and methodological framework necessary to revise the legacy spreadsheet and align it with contemporary research practices, thereby ensuring the consistency, comparability, and long-term usability of the dataset within broader archaeological investigations.
