ALS-based canopy height across Europe

This repository contains the relative height at 98th percentile (RH98), flight date, and point density derived from Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data over about 3300 patches of 640 by 640 m across Europe. Dataset An overview of the patch locations can be found in patches.gpkg. This geopackage contains the following columns: Column name Description Tile Sentinel-2 tile in which the patch is located Epsg epsg of the processed data Xmin minimum x coordinate of the patch (in the epsg of the patch) Xmax maximum x coordinate of the patch (in the epsg of the patch) Ymin minimum y coordinate of the patch (in the epsg of the patch) Ymax maximum y coordinate of the patch (in the epsg of the patch) Patch patch identifier Country country in which the patch is located country_id country ID The folder structure is based on the Sentinel-2 tile associated with each of the patches: ‘utm_zone/latitudinal_chunk/id_within_chunk/patch_id.tif’ Where utm_zone equals the UTM zone of the associated Sentinel-2 tile (e.g., 29 for tile 29SPB) latitudinal_chunk: latitudinal chunk of the associated Sentinel-2 tile (e.g., S for tile 29SPB) id_within_chunk: tile position within the latitudinal chunk (e.g., PB for tile 29SPB) patch_id: identifier of the patch (e.g. ulx_2700_uly_1840_0) Patch ulx_2700_uly_1840_0 is for example located in tile 29SPB and can be found in 29/S/PB/ALS_ulx_2700_uly_1840_0.tif. The geotiff contains three bands: Band Name Description Scale Offset 1 RH98 the height at which 98 percent of the first returns above a height cutoff of zero meter has been recorded 0.01 0 2 point_density The point density of the ALS data, calculated as the number of points per square meter. 0.01 0 3 date The flight date when the ALS data was collected. The date is composed of the year (YY) and the day of year (DDD): YYDDD. For example, 21058 represents the 27th of February 2021. 1 0 ALS data Country Description Belgium ALS data was provided over Flanders by Digitaal Vlaanderen through the EODaS (Earth Observation Data Science) programme. The data were obtained from the Open LiDAR Vlaanderen portal (https://remotesensing.vlaanderen.be/apps/openlidar/) and are distributed under the Free Open Data License Flanders v1.2: Free Open Data License Flanders v1.2. In Wallonia, ALS data were obtained from the Service public de Wallonie dataset Lidar 2021–2022 – Série (01-03-2023) available through the Walloon geodata portal (https://geodata.wallonie.be/id/3ef17388-54cd-4034-baad-d247243123c2. The dataset is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license: Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). Denmark ALS data for were obtained through the Danish data portal (https://dataforsyningen.dk). The dataset is provided by the Danish Climate Data Agency and the Danish Agency for Data Supply and Efficiency. Estonia ALS data for Estonia (2012–2017) were obtained from the Estonian Land Board (Maa-amet) geoportal (https://geoportaal.maaamet.ee/eng), provided by the republic of Estonia Land and Spatial Development Board. The dataset is distributed under the Republic of Estonia Land and Spatial Development Board open data license: Republic of Estonia opendata licence. Finland ALS data were obtained from the National Land Survey of Finland (Maanmittauslaitos) through the Karttapaikka geoportal (https://asiointi.maanmittauslaitos.fi/karttapaikka). The dataset originates from the National Land Survey’s laser scanning data (0.5 points m⁻²; acquisition years 2008–2019) and is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license: Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). France ALS data over France were obtained from the LiDAR HD dataset provided by the Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière (IGN) through the Géoplateforme portal (https://geoservices.ign.fr/lidarhd). The dataset is distributed under the Open Licence 2.0 (Etalab): France open licence 2.0. Germany Data for several German federal states were obtained from publicly available geospatial portals. These include datasets provided by the Bayerische Vermessungsverwaltung (Bavaria), the Landesvermessung und Geobasisinformation Brandenburg through the OpenGeodata Brandenburg portal, the Geschäftsstelle IMA GDI.NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia), the Landesamt für Geobasisinformation Sachsen (Saxony), and the Thüringer Landesamt für Bodenmanagement und Geoinformation (Thuringia).
