The SERNA Conceptual Standard for the Social Neuroscience of Empathy: Definitions, Relationships, and Theoretical Integration (SCS-SNE)

Empathy is a foundational construct in social neuroscience, yet the field remains hindered by deep-seated terminological fragmentation regarding the distinction between "affective sharing," "perspective-taking," and "compassion." Researchers frequently conflate the automatic mirroring of others' emotions with the cognitive understanding of their mental states, leading to inconsistent findings in fMRI and lesion studies. This document presents the SERNA Conceptual Standard for the Social Neuroscience of Empathy (SCS48), a unified theoretical framework designed to standardize definitions and model the causal pathways of empathic processing. SCS48 establishes 12 canonical terms (SCS48-T01 through T12) that strictly differentiate between bottom-up affective resonance and top-down cognitive appraisal. The standard introduces the Dual-Stream Empathy (DSE) model, which incorporates 10 testable hypotheses (SCS48-H01 through H10) mapping the bi-directional relationships between the mirror neuron system, the anterior insula, and the medial prefrontal cortex. By resolving 8 documented field inconsistencies—such as the "Empathy vs. Compassion" debate—SCS48 provides a rigorous foundation for cumulative science in social neuroscience, facilitating the development of clinical interventions for disorders characterized by social-cognitive deficits.
