This study characterized ESBL-producing Citrobacter species from surface river water in the Mooi River, North West province, by using antibiotic susceptibility testing, screening of ESBL, and whole genome sequencing. This is presumably the first report in South Africa as a middle-income country to screen ARs on Citrobacter species isolates from the environment.
