C. elegans worms start post-embryonic development upon feeding with E. coli. Living bacteria can fully support larval development, whereas bacterial lysate cannot even though it can induce gene expression like living bacterial. To identify nematode genes whose induction is essential for the larval development, we metabolically label mRNAs that are transcribed upon feeding with living bacteria or bacterial lysate and analyze them by RNA-seq.
