This dataset includes all de-identified data collected for the above project, in an Excel workbook. The Excel workbook contains three worksheets: (1) all data collected from participants in Study 1, which comprises 187 participants that were recruited from the general public via Prolific.com; (2) data collected from 333 current and 23 former competitive chess players in Study 2, which comprises 333 currently active competitive chess players and 23 formerly active players; and (3) data collected from 167 participants in Study 2 who reported that they were not current or former competitive chess players. All reverse-scored variables have been recoded and are indicated with a capital R. Worksheet 1 (Study 1 participants) contains the following data, in order: 1. Participant ID 2. Responses to the 19 items comprising the initial item pool for the new single-mindedness scale, along with totals for these 19 items and the seven items that were retained for the final scale. Items that were retained for the final scale are indicated with an asterisk (*). 3. Responses to the eight items comprising the Brief Sensation Seeking Scale, and their total. 4. Responses to the eight items comprising the Grit-S, along with subscale totals and grand total. 5. Responses to the five items comprising the measure of ambition and their total. 6. Responses to the 12 items comprising the General Competitiveness subscale of the Competitive Orientation Measure and their total. 7. Responses to the 20 items comprising the Mini-IPIP, along with subscale totals. 8. Responses to the 10 items comprising the Attention Switching subscale of the Autism Spectrum Quotient and their total. 9. Responses to the single-item measure of meaning in life. 10. Number of correct responses recorded on the Number Series subscale of the German Intelligence Structure Test 2000-R. 11. Number of distinct activities recorded during each hour of participants' most recent day off, followed by the mean number of distinct activities recorded each hour over 24 hours and the total number of distinct activities recorded over this 24-hour period. 12. Number of distinct activities recorded during each hour of participants' most recent work or school day, followed by the mean number of distinct activities recorded each hour over 24 hours and the total number of distinct activities recorded over this 24-hour period. 13. Mean number of distinct activities recorded per hour over the 48-hour reporting period. 14. Mean number of distinct activities recorded per day over the two-day reporting period. 15. Total number of distinct activities recorded over the two-day reporting period. 16. Age (in years). 17. Gender (where 1 = male, 2 = female, 3 = non-binary, 4 = undisclosed). Worksheet 2 (Study 2 competitive chess players) contains the following data, in order: 1. Participant ID 2. Responses to the seven items retained for the final single-mindedness scale and their total. 3. Responses to the eight items comprising the Brief Sensation Seeking Scale and their total. 4. Responses to the 10 items comprising the Attention Switching subscale of the Autism Spectrum Quotient and their total. 5. Age at learning chess (where 1 = 4 or younger, 2 = 5-9, 3 = 10-14, 4 = 15-19, 5 = 20-24, 6 = 25-29, 7 = 30-34, 8 = 35-39, 9 = 40-44, 10 = 45-49, 11 = 50-54, 12 = 55-59, 13 = 60-64, 14 = 65-69, 15 = 70+). 10. Years of chess experience (where 1 = <1, 2 = 1-5, 3 = 6-10, 4 = 11-15, 5 = 16-20, 6 = 21-25, 7 = 26-30, 8 = >30). 11. Average weekly chess practice in hours (where 1 = <1, 2 = 1-4, 3 = 5-9, 4 = 10-14, 5 = 15-19, 6 = 20-24, 7 = 25-29, 8 = 30+). 12. Presence of chess-related goals (where 1 = no current goals, 2 = current goals are unrelated to chess, 3 = at least one current goal is chess-related). 13. Current or former competitive player (where 0 = currently inactive and 1 = currently active). Worksheet 3 (Study 2 non-players) contains the following data, in order: 1. Participant ID 2. Responses to the seven items retained for the final single-mindedness scale and their total. 3. Responses to the eight items comprising the Brief Sensation Seeking Scale and their total. 4. Responses to the 10 items comprising the Attention Switching subscale of the Autism Spectrum Quotient and their total. 5.
