NRS-21533 | Personnel Index Cards - Permanent and Temporary Employees - Dredge Service, Newcastle [NSW Public Works and Services]

The cards in this series are separated into Permanent and Temporary; employee types. Permanent employee cards are stamped Permanent in red ink. All cards record the family and given names of the employee, date of birth, war service, division within the Public Service, employment type, serial number, previous service, exams passed, department and designation, margin or salary, and remarks and authority. Data is recorded on both sides of the cards. The index cards are arranged alphabetically.The Dredge Service operated primarily from Newcastle c.1875 until the last dredge was sold in 1976/78. Many NSW rivers were subject to siltation, flooding, and bars at their entrances. The dredges were employed to keep the river entrances open for coastal shipping, punts and flood mitigation.
