The Minor Planet Center (MPC), the official organization under the International Astronomical Union (IAU), is tasked with collecting, calculating, and disseminating positional measurement data for asteroids, comets, and irregular satellites of the outer major planets. It maintains a master archive of observational data and orbital parameters, tracks the discoverers of every celestial body, and announces discovery outcomes via electronic circulars and its official website. The MPC is operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory with funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States.
