The rumen bacteria, of which most are as yet unculturable, present an untapped goldmine for the discovery of novel antimicrobials and promising future drugs to combat the escalating problem of antimicrobial resistance. Using metagenomics and bioinformatics tools, the project aimed to prospect a rumen bacterial metagenome for potentially novel antimicrobial compounds with applications for the treatment of clinically important multidrug resistant infections.
