This repository provides the code and datasets corresponding to the manuscript "Satellite monitoring of Greenland wintertime buried lake drainage and potential ice flow response", and includes two folders:
1. Buried_lake_drainage_code
This folder contains two Python Jupyter Notebooks for detecting wintertime buried lake drainages (BLDs). The "step1_Detecting_σ0_variations.ipynb" Jupyter Notebook detects σ⁰ variations within depressions using Sentinel-1 imagery from Google Earth Engine (GEE) and depression data provided in the "Input_data" folder. The "step2_Assessing_summertime_meltwater.ipynb" Jupyter Notebook assesses maximum summertime meltwater areas using the output file from step 1, Sentinel-2 imagery from GEE, and depression data provided in the "Input_data" folder.
Detailed descriptions of each intermediate output file and the attributes in the final result file are provided in "Output_description.xlsx".
2. Buried_lake_drainage_dataset
This folder contains two Shapefiles of BLDs on the Greenland Ice Sheet detected during winters of 2017–2023. "buried_lake_drainage_type1_type2" represents complete BLDs and partial BLDs, while "buried_lake_drainage_type3" represents low-confidence BLDs.
The attribute table of each Shapefile contains a total of 10 attributes, including BLD ID, year, basin, date, depression ID, longitude, latitude, s1_before (Sentinel-1 acquisition date before drainage), s1_after (Sentinel-1 acquisition date after drainage), and BLD type (1–complete BLD; 2–partial BLD; 3–low-confidence BLD).
