Salivary, fecal, and colonic mucosal microbiota in IBD patients with different smoking statuses

Cigarette smoking has been reported to affect ulcerative colitis and Crohn`s disease in opposite ways, but the role of the gut microbiota in this phenomenon is not well understood. This study analyzed the salivary, fecal, and colonic mucosal microbiota of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, including smokers, ex-smokers, and non-smokers, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The resulting dataset supports the investigation of smoking-associated changes in both luminal and mucosa-associated microbial communities.
