Petitions to the Court of Civil Jurisdiction were to be lodged in the office of the Principal Clerk of the Court, who in turn entered them in a Petition book in the order in which they were received. The Court sat every Thursday, and for each session the Petition book shows name of petitioner (and, in some cases, his place of residence), and Court orders issued (for example petition granted, dismissed, rule nisi granted). Where a petition was withdrawn this was also noted.The Petition book does not contain the substance of the petitions received; it merely indicates that a petition or related document was received.From 2 November 1813, however, the volume only contains court orders and rules written out in full and signed by the Judge Advocate.A copy of Instructions for the Guidance of the Principal Clerk as to Receiving Petitions is in the front of the volume.This volume is labelled Petition Book of Old Court of Civil Jurisdiction in Equity.
