On March 16, 1976, a strong low pressure system was developing over the central Appalachians while an associated wave developed on a stationary front over Alabama and Georgia (Figure 1). This wave moved over the South Carolina coastal plain about midday, setting off severe weather in Horry and Beaufort counties.
