Biodiversity survey at Mt Kyffin near the Beardmore Glacier

A four person party visited an area close to Mt Kyffin on the south side of the Beardmore Glacier and at nearly 84° South latitude. In the 59-60 season the presence of many plants (lichens) and insects was reported. This report was investigated to check the presence of the lichens and insects and to obtain specimens to confirm identification. Two main ridges were visited with 5 sampling sites visited over four days. Individuals of springtails and mites were collected using an aspirator. Samples were used for genetic analysis. Soil samples were also taken at 2 sites and in conjunction with colleagues at McMurdo were found to contain Scottnema (nematode) and rotifers. Lichens were collected from the same five sites as the invertebrates. Specimens were collected for identification and lodging of a specimens in a herbarium. Sufficient material was found of Umbilicaria decussata and Usnea sphacelata to allow genetic and photosynthetic studies to be carried out. A species list was created.
