VPRS 11530 Private Street Construction Apportionment Books

This series was maintained by Council to document street construction projects and in particular to record the contributions of rate paying beneficiaries. The projects were administered by the Council in accordance with the Local Government Act 1915 (No.2686). Under this legislation, any street or lane constructed on property, or constructed on crown land adjacent to the land so that it provided rear or side access to a property, was called a street. In such circumstances the municipal council was entitled to establish a street construction scheme whereby owners of premises fronting on or adjacent to such streets contributed to the cost of their construction.The volumes include the following information:name of scheme (usually a street name)date on which the plan was adopted by Councilamount of contract or estimate of cost of constructionnames and addresses of contributing partieslot numbersize of each piece of land and frontageaccounting details.If a street is constructed wholly or partly at the cost of the owners or occupiers of any land which abuts or fronts the street, the Council may not at any future time recover any further costs from the owners or occupiers of the land in respect of the construction of a component of the street if that component has been previously constructed to the satisfaction of the Council.
