Country Foods for Good Health in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (2019-2024)

The short-term objectives of this study are to: i) determine the current concentrations of contaminants and nutrients in Inuvialuit country foods; ii) develop a health communication and risk perception survey tailored for the ISR, iii) re-analyze the International Polar Year - Inuit Health Survey data for ISR and Nunavut to assess the contribution of beluga to contaminant and nutrient intakes; iv) identify how Inuvialuit values and preferences combined with dietary messaging about diet and foods influences decision-making by Inuvialuit; v) determine preferences for communication about contaminants in the ISR; and vi) co-develop communication materials that reflect Inuvialuit culture, knowledge and values.In the long-term, this research will foster linkages between biological monitoring programs and human health research studies to support regional and territorial human health risk assessments and messaging initiatives, including the Inuit Health Survey.
