Environmental regulation, market competition, and green innovation

Amid rising global environmental challenges, this study scrutinizes the potential impact of environmental regulations on fostering environmentally friendly innovations within firms, with a keen focus on the nuanced dynamics across various degrees of market competition. By leveraging detailed firm-level data from China, our analysis reveals a substantial positive influence of environmental regulation enforcement on green innovation, an effect that is significantly amplified under conditions of intense market competition. Several robustness tests robustly validated these findings. This study enriches environmental economics by revealing how environmental regulations and market competition interact, thus supporting the Porter Hypothesis that stringent policies can stimulate green innovation. It also provides policymakers guidance on leveraging these dynamics to develop more effective environmental strategies.
