A suite of mineral substrates were allowed to incubate for one to six years in crustal fluids flowing through a basalt-hosted aquifer below North Pond, on the western flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Microbial community colonization dynamics were assessed via 16s amplicon sequencing. Live samples were used to enrich for micro-organisms capable of using a cathode poised to mimic the iron/oxygen redox couple as an electron donor.
