Listeria monocytogenes are facultative intracellular bacteria that cause food borne disease in humans. L. monocytogenes strains have been divided into four phylogenetic lineages, with Linage I and II containing the vast majority of clinical strains isolated to date. Strain UKVDL9 belongs to the less well characterized lineage III. The strain was originally isolated from a sheep brain, and displayed neurotropism in a mouse model of food borne listeriosis.
