Replication Data for: Alumni Relationships and Judicial Bias

This replication archive contains the data and code for "Alumni Relationships and Judicial Bias" (Liu and Zhang). The collection links Florida medical malpractice lawsuits to detailed information on the lawyers and judges involved in each case, in order to study whether shared law-school affiliations between plaintiff attorneys and randomly assigned judges affect case outcomes.The core observational unit is a medical malpractice claim filed in Florida between 1990 and 2018. Three classes of source data are combined:Closed Claims data from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation / Department of Financial Services — the universe of medical professional liability claims reported by Florida insurers, including injury severity, payment amounts, settlement stage, and final disposition.Florida circuit court case records from 26 county Clerks of Court — case-level metadata (filing date, disposition date, assigned judge, plaintiff/defense counsel) used to identify the lawyers and judges associated with each malpractice case. Records were obtained through public records requests and from publicly accessible online case-search systems.Florida Bar member information — lawyer and judge demographic and educational attributes (year of bar admission, law school attended, gender) used as covariates and to construct the same-school treatment indicator.Supplementary inputs include U.S. News & World Report 2001 law-school rankings (used to construct school-tier robustness checks) and the FRED CPI series (for inflation adjustment).The package ships raw inputs, all per-county cleaning and matching code, and the analysis-ready Stata datasets and regression scripts that reproduce every regression table in the paper.
