Lab 2: sampling of plant populations and communities (dataset 4)

The purpose of the experiment is to sample the plant population and communities by using quadracts, transects and trait sampling techniques. The experiment was done at the woodlots and the grassland at York University on Friday 26, at 2:30 pm. A group of two members included Laiba Khan and Simmy. The temperature recorded was approximately 23 degree celcius with a very warm and dry woodlot. 10 adult trees of Yellow Birch species were selected to observe and record the data. The diameter of the adult trees and the saplings were recorded in feet’s and inches at breast height by using a transect tape. The distance of adult tree to the sapling was measured in feet’s by holding each end of the tape from the middle of each tree trunk. The units of the recorded data were later converted from feet’s to meters. The percentage of canopy coverage was estimated by making a square with the index finger and thumb and pointing it towards the sky and tree. The area covered by the sky was recorded by looking through the square.
