In June 1988 the Premier announced that Sydney would bid to host the Olympic Games of 1996. An interdepartmental Committee - the Sydney Olympic Games Secretariat - with representatives from the Premier's Office, Public Works and Department of Sports and Recreation was formed to prepare the bid. Public Works was requested to provide architectural and planning assistance to the Sydney Olympic Games Secretariat. Drawings of the proposed venues and conservation plans for precincts were produced to meet the 31 August deadline for the submission of the bid. In November 1988 the Australian Olympic Federation awarded the Australian bid to Melbourne. This is a rayon banner produced to publicise Sydney's bid for the 1996 Olympics.
