The Brown Norway rat RGSC v3.1 assembly, covering more than 90% of the genome, is provided by the Rat Genome Sequencing Consortium (RGSC). The strategy for the Rat project is a hybrid of the Whole Genome Shotgun (WGS) approach used for the mouse genome and the hierarchical (BAC clone) approach used for the human genome. The sequencing combines whole-genome shotgun (WGS) reads with BAC shotgun reads and BAC end sequence reads. Fingerprint contigs contributed to BAC selection and genome assembly.
