He was born in 1758 and died near London on May 10, 1798. He served under Cook in his second and third voyages and commanded an expedition to the Pacific, 1781-95. During this trip, he explored the Strait of San Juan de Fuca, the Gulf of Georgia, Vancouver Island, and the coast of California. He left a narrative which was published after his death.
