The presented dataset corresponds to a nickel boride-based bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. Developing highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts is essential for advancing renewable energy solutions. In this study, a simple one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method was employed to synthesize boron-containing derivatives directly on a nickel substrate. The resulting Ni/Ni₃B material exhibited outstanding electrocatalytic performance, achieving low overpotentials of 264 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 250 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a current density of 10 mA/cm², with corresponding Tafel slopes of 159 and 67 mV/dec, respectively. In-situ Raman spectroscopy provided insights into the structural transformations occurring during electrochemical reactions, revealing the formation of NiOOH as an active intermediate in OER and the involvement of Ni-B and Ni-O species in HER, which facilitate electron transfer and enhance intermediate stabilization. Long-term stability tests demonstrated exceptional durability, maintaining performance over 1000 hours at ±10 mA/cm². These findings underscore the potential of Ni/Ni₃B as an efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for practical water-splitting applications.
