Psychological distress affects work performance, compromises teaching quality, and is among teachers’ leading causes of absenteeism. In Brazil, the prevalence of mental disorders among teachers ranges from 23% to 74%. Understanding the predictors of psychological distress among educators is essential, particularly those related to the work context and the leadership styles of school principals. These variables influence the well-being of school staff, teachers’ health, and educational outcomes. The data were used to conduct three studies aimed at (a) developing instruments to assess the teaching work context, (b) creating a measure for assessing school principals’ leadership styles through external evaluation, and (c) analyzing the impact of the work context, school principals’ leadership styles, and sociodemographic variables on the incidence of depression among K-12 teachers.
