Identification of a 2n gamete formation mechanism underlying the development of a nonaploid Diospyros kaki Akiou

First and second division restitution (FDR and SDR) are the dominant mechanisms of 2n gamete production; FDR gametes have a higher degree of heterozygosity transmission, which is advantageous in breeding. However, the discrimination of these mechanisms from the consequence of hybridization is a challenging task, especially in higher polyploids. Here we studied the formation mechanism of a nonaploid Diospyros kaki cv Akiou, which was bred via hybridization between D. kaki hexaploid cultivars.
