The gut microbiome of an individual shapes the local environmental surface microbiome, but the clinical consequences of this are uncertain. We sought to determine how the intensive care unit (ICU) patient gut microbiome shapes the ICU room surface microbiome, focusing on vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), a common ICU pathogen.
