The R1 gene (ZmR1) is responsible for purple leaf sheaths and veins in maize. ZmR1 gene encodes a bHLH transcription factor. The ubiquitous overexpression of ZmR1 results in the whole plant being purple. RNA-seq of Jing724 wild type and ZmR1-overexpressing Jing724-OE leaves was performed to analyze gene expression regulation and molecular mechanism of the ZmR1 gene.
