Environics International Environmental Monitor, 1997

<p>Environics International Environmental Monitor, 1997 is the first commercially available monitor of global environmental attitudes since the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. One of the objectives was to explore changes in public perceptions over the five-year period since 1992; a period in which environmental concerns have been widely perceived by elites in many countries to be declining in the face of pressing economic concerns.</p>

<p>This report is based on the results of in-home or telephone surveys with representative samples of at least 1,000 citizens in 24 countries on all continents and at varying stages of development (which together represent over 60 percent of the population of the world). A total of 32 questions were posed dealing with such topics as overall environmental perceptions and concerns. Research was conducted by respected social research institutes in each country between December 9, 1996 and April 30, 1997.</p>
