This dataset is the supporting data and code for the article "China can enhance its carbon and nitrogen reduction potential by optimizing maize trade across provinces".1. Dataset. xlsx is all the data used for generating the figures of the main manuscript and the supplementary information for this study.2. The MATLAB code and data folder contains the MATLAB code and related data to solve the interprovincial maize trade matrix; please see Read me.docx first.3. We also provided detailed data on the carbon and nitrogen footprints of maize production at the national, regional, and provincial scales from 1995 to 2021, nitrogen footprint with different nitrogen loss calculation methods, and data on the interprovincial maize trade matrix from 1995 to 2021.4. The folder named Validation data and references provide validation dataset and relevant literature on N2O emissions, NH3 volatilization and nitrate nitrogen leaching during the maize growing season in Excel and Word formats, respectively.
