GIST Impact’s Biodiversity dataset calculates the potential “species extinction risk” posed by a company’s direct operations on nature and biodiversity. The outputs include impacts on terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. GIST Impact uses the latest LCIA method (based on the drivers-outcomes-impacts pathway) to calculate the biodiversity footprint of a company as a result of 8 direct and indirect drivers: GHG emissions, Air Pollution (NOx and SOx), Water consumption, Water & land pollution (Total Nitrogen and Total Phosphorous), Land use change and Waste generation. Salient features of GIST Impact’s biodiversity data: 1. Based on actual data: The impacts are calculated from actual company disclosed data and can be traced back to the source. In absence of disclosed data, estimated data from GIST Impact’s Machine Learning models are used. 2. Geographic apportionment: The impacts are geographically apported based on the company’s operational locations. 3. Output metric: The metric for the biodiversity dataset is the global Potentially Disappeared Fraction (PDF) of species, also referred to as “extinction risk”. To help visualize the scope of impacts, GIST Impact also provides the outputs in tCO2e equivalent numbers of PDF. 4. Impacts from waste generation: While waste generation contributes significantly to impacts on nature and biodiversity, most LCIA methods do not provide the Characterization Factors (CFs) for its waste. GIST Impact has calculated the CFs for waste generation based on other drivers and includes it in the dataset.
