Soil was collected from the commercial carrot fields in the Holland Marsh, Ontario in the first week of June each year from 2021 to 2023. Fields with a history of cavity spot were selected with assistance from the local Integrated Pest Management (IPM) team using data from 2015 to 2019. All fields were within a 20 km radius, had muck soil with 35–80% organic matter, were planted to an onion-carrot rotation and cropped using the similar agronomic practices.
