Strain WBS, a novel psychrophilic, anaerobic, halotolerant bacterium was isolated from littoral bottom sediments of the White and Barents Seas, Arctic, Russia. Cells were Gram-positive-staining long rods, occurred singly or in pairs, and were motile. Strain WBS grew at temperatures between 8 and 32OC (optimum 20OC), pH between 5.2 and 8.3 (optimum pH 7.2) and at NaCl concentrations between 0 and 70 g l-1 (optimum 32 g l-1). It reduced sulfate, thiosulfate and elemental sulfur into sulfide. The strain utilized a quite wide range of carbohydrates (D-glucose, D-fructose, D-ribose, cellobiose, D-mannitol) and produced acetate, CO2 and H2 as end products of glucose metabolism.
