Abstract: Eyewitness News in Baton Rouge, LA reports on the planned closing of the National Hansen's Disease Center in Carville, LA, and the possibility of its conversion into a facility managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. With fewer than 200 patients residing there, and no new people arriving given medicine's ability to cure Hansen's disease, the need for the dedicated center has lessened. Reporting indicates that residents would be allowed to stay, but that federal prisoners might also be housed there. The footage shows officials of the US Public Health Service, short interviews with residents, and some calling for the resignation of director John Duffy. The footage then shifts to Dr. Paul Brand discussing a surgical workstation that is under development at Carville to help assess patients and their needs, as well as how to develop a molded sandal to aid patients with foot problems resulting from Hansen's disease.
