TheNationalNanotechnologyInitiative(NNI)wascreatedin2000tofocusandcoordinatethenanoscienceandnanotechnologyresearchanddevelopment(R&D)activitiesbeingfundedbyseveralfederalagencies.ThepurposeoftheNNIistomarshaltheseresearchactivitiesinordertoaccelerateresponsibledevelopmentanddeploymentofnanotechnologyforeconomicbenefitandnationalsecurity.TotakestockoftheprogressoftheNNI,Congress,inP.L.108-153,the21stCenturyNanotechnologyResearchandDevelopmentAct,directedtheNationalResearchCounciltocarryoutareviewoftheprogrameverythreeyears.Thisreportpresentstheresultsofthefirstofthosereviews,whichaddressestheeconomicimpactofnanotechnologydevelopmentsandprovidesabenchmarkofU.S.R&Deffortsrelativetothoseundertakenbyforeigncompetitors.Inaddition,thereportoffersanassessmentofthecurrentstatusofresponsibledevelopmentofnanotechnologyandcommentsonthefeasibilityofmolecularself-assembly.
