Nine-banded armadillos are naturally infected with Mycobacterium leprae and are implicated in leprosy zoonotic transmission in the USA. In Mexico, with only one infected animal reported in 1984, animal reservoirs' contribution to humans' current leprosy burden is unknown. Here we confirm that animals and humans are infected with a similar M. leprae strain in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, suggesting that animal reservoirs can contribute to disease transmission in Mexico.
