Local political attitudes, moral orientations, social network and
social classing in a small city.
Topics: Importance of municipal institutions for well-being in the
municipality; familiarity of local politicians and elites; attitude to
local controversies: community school, attracting industrial businesses
and constructing a town hall; political interest and political extent
to which informed; personal political activity and perceived
opportunity to influence local political decisions; perceived influence
of trade union, industry and church in the FRG; personal sympathy in
wage conflicts; tax reduction versus increase in social services of the
government; importance of upward social mobility of the children;
judgement on possibilities of upward social mobility and decline;
self-assessment of social class; personal criteria for class
assignment; general contentment with life; sociability; occupation
orientation; friendships; topics of conversation with friends; social
network; voting decision in the city council election and Federal
Parliament election 1969; general party preference; party preference of
father; party preference and religious denomination of friends; local
ties; tensions between long-time and new residents; personal regional
and social origins and that of spouse; media usage; membership in
associations and clubs; age of children; religiousness.
Scales: work satisfaction; social moral orientation; authoritarianism;
traditionalism; anomy; dogmatism and traditional family ideology.
Interviewer observation: detailed description of the living room of
respondent; furnishing style; condition of furniture and living room;
floor; type and pattern of rug, curtains and walls; cabinets and
television set; books; pictures on the wall and picture motifs; other
objects in the living room.
While the interviewer recorded the characteristics of the living room,
the respondent filled out a written part of the survey. Interviewer
rating: length of interview and place of interview; presence of other
persons and their interventions in interview; interruptions of survey;
reliability and willingness of respondent to cooperate; number of
contact attempts; residential building type.
After the end of the survey the interviewer left behind a
questionnaire to measure social distance which the respondent was to
return by mail.
Demography: age; marital status; number of children; religious
denomination; school education; occupation; professional position;
employment; head of household; interest in politics.
