Childhood trauma increases NSSI risk through impaired mentalization (both hypo- and hypermentalization), as shown in a large adolescent sample. However, salivary oxytocin levels were not associated with NSSI, mentalization, or trauma, indicating it is not a reliable biomarker for this behavior in community populations.
