Abstract The discovery that the universe’s expansion is not only ongoing but accelerating has revolutionized modern cosmology. This paper reviews the foundational theoretical frameworks, including Hubble’s Law and the Friedmann equations, which describe the universe’s evolution. We then explore the major observational pillars supporting acceleration, notably Type Ia supernovae, the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). The concept of dark energy, particularly the cosmological constant (!), is critically examined as the leading explanation for this observed acceleration within the !CDM model. Alternative hypotheses, such as modified gravity and evolving dark energy fields, are also considered. Finally, this review delves into the significant implications of cosmic acceleration for the ultimate fate of the universe and addresses persistent challenges, like the Hubble tension, clarifying that while acceleration is strongly evidenced, its underlying cause and precise dynamics remain central questions in contemporary physics.
