Romanian Novels Published Between 1845 and 2000

This dataset records Romanian novel production between 1845 and 2000 in structured bibliographic form. It contains 6,232 records, each corresponding to a novel title and including author, title, place of publication, publisher, year, and subgenre classification. The dataset is derived from the chronological bibliographic inventory of the Romanian novel and is designed to support quantitative and historical research on the evolution of Romanian prose fiction across more than a century and a half. The dataset covers publications from 1845 to 2000 and includes 2,562 distinct author-name entries, 6,113 distinct title entries, 59 places of publication, 1,001 publisher entries, and 50 subgenre categories. The largest publication center is București, followed by Cluj, Iași, Timișoara, Craiova, Galați, Constanța, Brașov, and Sibiu. The most frequent subgenre categories in the current version include Roman social, Roman psihologic, Roman sentimental, Roman polițist, Roman istoric, Roman pentru copii și tineret, Roman parabolă, Roman realist-socialist, Roman autobiografic, and Roman rural. The dataset is suitable for research in Romanian literary history, book history, sociology of literature, quantitative literary studies, genre history, and cultural analytics. It can be used to examine the long-term dynamics of novel production, the changing prominence of subgenres, the geography of publishing, the concentration of publishers and editorial centers, and the transformation of Romanian prose fiction across major historical periods, including the long nineteenth century, the interwar period, state socialism, late socialism, and the post-1989 transition.
