Miron Hirschwald

Miron HirschwaldManager of Imprimerie Darantiere in Dijon who oversaw the typesetting of JJ's Ulysses between April 1921 and January 1922; best remembered for introducing erroneous corrections to the text. He was born Miron Hirschwald (also Hirchwald) in Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia, the son of Latvians Jacob Hirschwald and his wife Anna. He emigrated to Paris during the First World War with his wife Vera Ingal; their sons were born in Paris (1916), Annecy (1918), and Dijon (1919). In Paris, Hirschwald offered lessons in Russian. Sainte-Hélène, petite île, his translation into French of M. A. Aldanov's historical novel, was published in 1921. By 1924, Hirschwald was working as a journalist in Dijon (using the name Michel and, occasionally, Maurice), often for Parisian papers, and he continued in this role until at least the early 1940s.
