There is a seasonal relationship between environmental factors and changes in macroalgal dominance in a relatively pristine western Caribbean reef lagoon. Seasonal variations in environmental conditions and the low occurrence of herbivorous fish and sea urchins support the assumption that these factors underlie the recorded dominance of brown algae. The study highlights the importance of the driving factors and mechanisms that govern the coral–algal phase shift phenomenon in tropical reefs.
